Sound System Installation Wakefield

We were recently contracted by The John Curwen Primary School in Heckmondwike, near Wakefield, to design and install a modern PA sound system installation that would significantly improve sound clarity and coverage for assemblies, performances, and school events. The school’s existing 100-volt line audio system was no longer capable of providing adequate volume or speech intelligibility, prompting the need for a contemporary school audio system West Yorkshire.

System Design and Speaker Placement

To meet the school’s requirements, we selected four Electro-Voice ZX1 speakers, each featuring an 8″ driver and horn for exceptional clarity and coverage. Two speakers were mounted on the left and right sides of the stage, while the remaining two were positioned halfway down the hall to act as infill sound, ensuring balanced audio throughout the space.

To enhance low-frequency response for musical performances and school productions, we also installed two ZX1 12″ bass speakers discreetly under the stage. This combination of full-range and bass speakers ensures a rich, powerful sound that is both clear and immersive for students, staff, and visitors.

Central Control and Audio Processing

The core of the system is housed in a custom-built Swan Mixer Flightcase, providing a professional and organized control hub. Inside the flightcase, we installed an Allen & Heath ZED 18 PA mixer, offering 18 microphone channels for flexible input options.

For wireless convenience, we added four Audio-Technica handheld radio microphone systems and an Audio-Technica lapel microphone system, giving teachers and performers freedom of movement while maintaining consistent audio quality.

To optimize the sound output, a DBX 2-way crossover was integrated to balance frequency distribution between the speakers and subwoofers. Powering the system, a QSC GX3 and QSC GX5 professional stereo amplifier ensure reliable, high-quality amplification, capable of handling large assemblies and energetic school performances.

Stage Sound System

Capturing clear speech and performance audio on stage was a key priority. We installed two Audio-Technica AT875 shotgun microphones on small ceiling brackets above the front of the stage. These microphones provide focused audio pickup, ensuring that every word and note is clearly heard by the audience, whether during a school production, assembly, or award ceremony.

As part of the comprehensive sound system installation, we installed four Apart Audio ceiling speakers within the dining area. Each speaker features an 8″ driver and is discreetly mounted within the existing suspended ceiling tiles.
