School Sound System Installation Wakefield

Definition Audio Visual recently completed a professional school sound system installation in Wakefield at John Curwen Primary School, providing a modern PA system designed to deliver exceptional speech clarity and powerful audio for assemblies, performances, productions and school events.

The school’s previous 100-volt line sound system no longer provided adequate coverage or intelligibility within the main hall. Our solution was to design and install a completely new performance audio system that would deliver consistent sound throughout the space while remaining simple for staff to operate.

High-Performance School PA System

To achieve balanced audio coverage across the hall, we installed a professional loudspeaker system using Electro-Voice ZX1 speakers.

The installation includes four full-range loudspeakers strategically positioned throughout the hall.

Two speakers are mounted either side of the stage to provide direct coverage for the audience, while a further two speakers are positioned midway down the hall to act as delay speakers, ensuring every pupil and visitor experiences clear, even sound regardless of where they are seated.

Enhanced Low Frequency Performance

To improve the audio experience during school productions, musical performances and assemblies, we also installed two Electro-Voice bass loudspeakers beneath the stage.

The addition of dedicated low-frequency speakers adds depth and warmth to music playback while maintaining excellent speech intelligibility, creating a balanced audio system suitable for both spoken word and live performances.

Professional Audio Control System

All control equipment is housed within a custom-built Swan flightcase, providing a secure and portable control centre for school events.

The system includes:

• Allen & Heath ZED-18 professional audio mixer
• Four Audio-Technica wireless handheld microphone systems
• Audio-Technica wireless lapel microphone system
• DBX electronic crossover
• QSC GX3 professional power amplifier
• QSC GX5 professional power amplifier

This combination of equipment provides flexible microphone connectivity, professional audio processing and reliable amplification, allowing the system to support everything from daily assemblies to full-scale school productions.

Stage Microphone Installation

To ensure clear speech and vocal reproduction during performances, two Audio-Technica AT875 shotgun microphones were installed above the front of the stage.

Mounted discreetly on ceiling brackets, these highly directional microphones capture presenters, choirs and performers with exceptional clarity while reducing unwanted background noise.

This enables speeches, school plays and musical performances to be heard clearly throughout the hall without requiring performers to wear microphones.

Four Apart Audio ceiling speakers were installed within the suspended ceiling, providing discreet, even sound coverage throughout the dining hall.

The speakers blend seamlessly into the ceiling while delivering excellent audio quality for both announcements and background music.

100-Volt Line Amplifier System

The dining hall loudspeakers are powered by a professional TOA 100-volt line mixer amplifier, installed within the equipment rack.

The amplifier provides reliable operation and allows staff to adjust audio levels easily, ensuring comfortable listening levels throughout the space.

Flexible Multi-Purpose Audio

One of the major advantages of the installation is the ability to extend audio from the main hall into the dining area.

During larger assemblies, concerts or school performances, the dining hall can be used as an overflow space while continuing to receive clear, synchronised audio from the main hall.

This flexible arrangement allows the school to accommodate larger audiences without compromising the listening experience.
